In these dire times, the “collaboration” between livestock breeders of Kompsatos valley and a “nature’s clean-up crew” seems to have equally benefited both. Increasing and strict sanitary regulations of carcasses disposal force livestock breeders to process accordingly with their dead animals, something that might be difficult to achieve in some places. This year vulture experts and the rewilding team in the Rhodope Mountains counted 73 hatched vultures within the regular monitoring programme of the only indigenous griffon vulture population in Bulgaria.

Red and fallow deer populations in Rhodope  rewilding area in Bulgaria are increasing rewarding the team’s rewilding efforts. The Rewilding Rhodopes Foundation have been working for many years to reestablish populations of both fallow and red deer in Bulgaria’s Eastern Rhodope mountains. Introducing small groups of animals over successive years is proving a good way to establish viable red and fallow deer populations. 

This year we mark the “Earth day” 50th anniversary with a visually stunning new exhibition, showcasing the natural wonders of the Eastern Rhodopes. This year the event has gone digital and so did we.

Reaching out to younger generations and inspiring them to learn more about the wild nature around them is a critical part of rewilding. This week our rewilding team participated in an exciting online lesson with young followers and enthusiasts from Secondary Vocational School of Tourism “Aleksandar Paskalev” – Haskovo, Bulgaria.

Пореден случай със загинал белоглав лешояд бе констатиран вчера  от екипа на БДЗП с куче за борба с отровите в Източните Родопи. Отново съмненията са за отравяне.  Птицата е възрастна, от размножаваща се двойка, и е намерена близо до село Малко Брягово. Миналата година по същото време и на същото място екипът ни откри отново загинал, най-вероятно заради отравяне, белоглав лешояд.
 

4373 броя водолюбиви птици от 22 вида бяха преброени от екипи на Фондация По-диви Родопи и Българското дружество за защита на птиците (БДЗП) на традиционното Среднозимно преброяване на водолюбивите птици във водоемите по долината на река Арда, Източните Родопи през почивните дни.

The main conservation action of the “Conservation of black and griffon vultures in Rhodope mountains”project in the Greek part of Rhodope Mountain is the establishment of a network of small-sized feeding sites for vultures that will be supplied by livestock breeders.

This year, the LIFE Vultures Team rom BSPB and Rewilding Rhodopes counted about 50 less Griffon Vultures compared to last year in the Eastern Rhodopes.
